A 35-year-old man has been arrested after law enforcement officers intercepted an Isuzu truck transporting suspected illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R7.5 million on the N1 near Vaal Plaza in the Free State.
The arrest was made on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, during an operation targeting the illegal tobacco trade along one of South Africa’s busiest freight corridors.
According to authorities, officers stopped and searched the truck, leading to the discovery of a large consignment of suspected illicit cigarettes concealed inside the vehicle. The cigarettes, with an estimated street value of approximately R7.5 million, were seized along with the Isuzu truck used to transport the load.
The 35-year-old driver was taken into custody and is expected to appear before the Parys Magistrate’s Court soon. He is expected to face charges relating to the possession and transportation of suspected illicit cigarettes.

The seizure highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the illicit tobacco trade, which continues to cost the South African economy billions of rand annually in lost tax revenue.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the origin or intended destination of the consignment, and investigations are continuing to determine whether additional suspects may be linked to the operation.
The confiscated cigarettes will undergo further examination as part of the investigation.
Law enforcement officials have welcomed the seizure, describing it as a significant blow to the illegal tobacco market operating across South Africa’s road network.
