A truck driver is in hot water after unsecured crates of plums fell off his truck, tragically killing four pedestrians in Tulbagh on Monday.
The incident occurred around 10 am on Drostdy Road when the driver reportedly lost control while navigating a bend, causing the freight to dislodge.
The victims, identified as Elsabe Bezuidenhout (58), her daughter Ingrid Marthinus (25), and Ingrid’s children, Jesnice (8) and Lee John Marthinus (9 months), were walking from the Vooruitsig farm into town to buy school supplies.
Two of the victims died at the scene. Jesnice succumbed to her injuries in hospital, while Lee John, initially transferred to Tygerberg Hospital, later passed away at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.
Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie confirmed that a culpable homicide case has been opened. “Witness accounts indicate the truck’s crates were not properly secured, leading to the tragic events,” Pojie said.
The driver was arrested and is set to appear in court this week.
Billy Claasen from the Rural and Farmworkers Development Organisation condemned the loss of life, particularly within an already vulnerable community.
“This tragedy highlights the devastating consequences of negligence. We demand accountability and will closely monitor the case,” said Claasen.
Always Secure Your Cargo
This incident serves as a stark reminder for truck drivers to double-check their loads before hitting the road. Unsecured cargo can turn a simple journey into a fatal disaster, putting drivers, bystanders, and other road users at risk.
Failing to secure freight isn’t just about fines or penalties – it’s about the lives that could be lost due to oversight. Drivers can face criminal charges, as in this case, and their lives can be forever changed by preventable tragedies.
Authorities urge all truckers and logistics companies to prioritise cargo security. Routine inspections, proper strapping, and abiding by load limits are critical.
