A truck driver can count himself lucky after he escaped being crashed in his truck cab when a container fell and crashed it at Durban Container Terminal Pier 1.
While the rule is that you are supposed to disembark from your truck when loading, truckers, however, often wait until the crane arrives before they can do that.
In an almost similar accident at Cape Town Container Terminal, a 32-year-old truck driver was killed when a suspected mechanical failure on the crane caused the container to fall onto his truck killing him instantly.
A witness in the recent accident says that the spreader hit a container and knocked it off a stack falling onto the truck.
The driver was not in the truck at the time of the accident because he was about to load.
“Following procedure saved this guy because had he been sitting in the truck, it would easily have been a fatal accident,” said the witness who refused to be named.
