Duma Cracks Down on Undocumented Foreign Truck Drivers as Transport Month Kicks Off

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has launched a hard-hitting operation targeting undocumented foreign truck drivers along the busy N3 corridor, vowing to clamp down on lawlessness in the freight sector.

This comes as three undocumented foreign nationals were arrested during a joint operation with the Home Affairs Immigration Unit at the Midway Weighbridge near Pietermaritzburg.

“We are undertaking an urgent operation in weighbridges targeting trucks and undocumented foreign nationals along the N3,” Duma said, marking the start of Transport Month.

Duma emphasised that the crackdown is a direct response to the growing number of serious and fatal crashes linked to trucks driven by undocumented foreign drivers.

“We have been joined by the Home Affairs Immigration Unit. We are acting against an increase in horrific accidents involving trucks driven by undocumented foreign nationals,” he added.

The N3 remains one of the country’s most critical freight routes, carrying thousands of heavy-duty trucks daily between Durban and Gauteng. However, concerns have mounted over safety standards and driver compliance, with authorities warning that unqualified and undocumented drivers pose a serious risk to all road users.

Duma’s operation signals a tougher stance on non-compliant trucking companies and their drivers, with more inspections and arrests expected as authorities intensify enforcement along the route.

Truck drivers and logistics companies are urged to ensure all documentation is in order to avoid fines, arrests, or potential suspension of operating licences during the ongoing blitz.
