A recent law enforcement operation along the M7 has highlighted serious compliance concerns within Durban’s freight sector, after authorities uncovered a trucking company with approximately R297,000 in outstanding speeding fines.
The coordinated multi-agency blitz, led by the eThekwini Municipality, targeted freight vehicles and other road users travelling along the busy route connecting the N3 in Pinetown to the Port of Durban.
In total, the operation resulted in R368,400 in fines, with the Road Traffic Inspectorate issuing R310,500, metro police R34,900, and the Fire Department R23,000 for various infringements.
Authorities confirmed that several violations were identified, including defective tyres, failure to display licence discs, and motorists disregarding road signs. However, the discovery of a single freight operator with nearly R300,000 in unpaid fines stood out as a major concern.
The enforcement action forms part of ongoing efforts to improve safety along one of Durban’s most critical freight corridors. The M7 carries a high volume of truck traffic daily, making it a key route for cargo movement between inland logistics hubs and port operations.
Acting Head of the eThekwini Transport Authority, Nelisiwe Zama, said compliance on this route remains essential due to the risks associated with speeding, overloading, and unroadworthy heavy vehicles. She added that similar operations will continue as part of a broader road safety strategy.
Community stakeholders have welcomed the increased law enforcement presence but emphasised the need for consistency. Concerns about unsafe driving behaviour and enforcement gaps have been raised over time, particularly given the strategic importance of the corridor.

From an industry perspective, the findings also reflect the operational pressures faced within Durban’s freight network. Tight delivery schedules, congestion, and port-related delays often place strain on operators and drivers, though this does not excuse non-compliance.
While the latest crackdown has delivered immediate results, transport stakeholders argue that long-term improvement will depend on sustained enforcement, better infrastructure, and ongoing engagement between authorities and the freight sector.
The M7 remains a vital link in South Africa’s logistics chain, and ensuring safer operations along this corridor will be critical for both industry stability and public safety.
