Engen Becomes First Oil Company in SA to Achieve RTMS Certification for National Fleet

Engen Petroleum has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first oil company in South Africa to secure Road Transport Management System (RTMS) certification for its entire national fleet of heavy vehicles. This achievement highlights Engen’s commitment to safety, compliance, and operational excellence in the transport of hazardous materials.

RTMS certification is a voluntary initiative aimed at improving road safety and efficiency in fleet management. By securing this certification, Engen sets a benchmark in responsible transport practices. The certification was awarded by JC Auditors (JCA), a firm with nearly two decades of experience in RTMS auditing.

At the certification handover event on 22 January 2025, Bonnie Moyo, Engen’s National Transport and Logistics Manager, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “Achieving RTMS certification for Engen’s national fleet is a testament to our unwavering commitment to safety, operational excellence, and compliance.”

Transport Compliance Officer Zeenett Naidoo echoed this sentiment, saying, “RTMS is more than just a certification for us—it is a structured, data-driven approach to fleet safety and efficiency.”

Government representatives, including Chris Stretch from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, commended Engen for leading the way in transport safety. “Engen’s leadership in achieving RTMS certification sets a powerful example for the broader transport industry,” Stretch said.

RTMS certification focuses on key areas such as accident reduction, load management, driver wellness, and vehicle maintenance. These aspects are crucial in enhancing road safety and ensuring efficient transport operations. Many transporters who have adopted RTMS have reported benefits such as reduced breakdowns, improved vehicle utilization, and enhanced driver well-being.

JC Auditors applied South African National Standards (SANS) such as SANS 10231, which governs the transport of dangerous goods by road. These standards ensure that Engen’s operations align with best practices, further reinforcing the company’s dedication to risk mitigation and regulatory compliance.

Engen’s achievement marks a positive step for the transport industry, demonstrating how voluntary certification can contribute to safer roads and more efficient logistics. As more companies adopt RTMS, the overall safety and reliability of South Africa’s transport sector stand to benefit.
