A 26-year-old Zimbabwean national has been slapped with a heavy 15-year prison sentence after he was caught trying to smuggle a massive stash of commercial explosives through the Beitbridge border earlier this year.
Emerson Ruzvidzo pleaded guilty in the Musina Regional Court on Monday, 24 November 2025, and was sentenced on the spot for unlawful possession of explosives. The man was nabbed back on 15 May 2025 when police at the Beitbridge Port of Entry stopped and inspected a Toyota Quantum pulling a trailer.
During a routine search, officers uncovered a frightening payload tucked inside the trailer, including 2505 white cartridge tubes and 106 yellow explosive cords, all professionally packaged. The haul was later examined and valued at more than R330 000, raising serious questions about where the shipment was headed and what could have happened if it reached the wrong hands.
Ruzvidzo was immediately arrested and the explosive materials along with the Quantum and the trailer were confiscated. The case was taken over by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit based in Musina, who dug deeper and built a solid case leading to a swift conviction.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General (Adv.) Gopz Govender, congratulated the team, giving special recognition to Lieutenant Colonel Tshivhase, the lead investigator.

“This was excellent policing that prevented a potentially deadly situation. These explosives could have caused unimaginable damage,” Govender said.
Truckers who cross Beitbridge daily know the border is hot right now, with organised criminal syndicates trying every trick in the book, from hijackings and drug smuggling to now explosives trafficking. This arrest is a solid win for law enforcement, showing that the Hawks are not playing games.
The taxi driver joins a few other truck drivers who were also sentenced to 15 years behind bars this year.
