One person has been killed in a serious collision involving a side tipper truck and a bakkie towing a trailer on the N7 at Piekenierskloof Pass between Citrusdal and Piketburg on Sunday morning.
According to information received, the crash occurred in the early hours of the morning, with emergency services rushing to the scene shortly thereafter. The impact left the roadway completely obstructed, with debris from the bakkie and trailer scattered across both lanes of the pass.

Motorists travelling through the area were met with a full road closure, which remained in place for several hours to allow paramedics, traffic officers, and recovery teams to attend to the scene and clear the wreckage. Traffic was backed up on both sides of the pass as authorities worked to manage the situation.
While it is believed that the fatality occurred in the bakkie, emergency medical services have not yet released official confirmation regarding the identity of the deceased or the exact number of casualties involved. At this stage, no further details have been provided on the condition of the truck driver.
The cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed, and authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation. Piekenierskloof Pass is known for its challenging driving conditions, particularly for heavy vehicles and motorists towing trailers, with steep gradients and sharp bends requiring extra caution.
Motorists are urged to remain vigilant when travelling through mountain passes, especially during early morning hours, and to obey all road safety regulations. Heavy vehicle drivers are also reminded to ensure their loads are secure and braking systems are in optimal condition before descending long passes.
