FAW Expands JH6 Range with Two New Models, Targets Heavy-Duty Workhorses

FAW Trucks Southern Africa has added two new models to its JH6 flagship range, banking on the momentum gained by its well-received JH6 500FT-AMT.

The newcomers, the JH6 33.460FT-AMT and the JH6 28.550FT-AMT, aim to bring more muscle and comfort to the heavy-duty segment, and by the looks of it, they’re gunning for serious fleet players.

FAW says the additions are meant to offer more horsepower options for different transport needs, from long-haul logistics to mining and construction. Whether that translates to a big shift in market preference remains to be seen, but the brand clearly wants to carve out a larger slice of Southern Africa’s trucking pie.

What’s New in the Range

The JH6 33.460FT-AMT comes with a 9.5-litre engine pushing out 338 kW and 2,150 Nm of torque, paired with an AMT gearbox and 33-ton GCM — a setup that FAW reckons is ideal for long-haul freight.

Meanwhile, the JH6 28.550FT-AMT ups the ante with a 407 kW engine delivering 2,600 Nm of torque. It’s positioned more for demanding jobs like construction and regional transport, and FAW claims improved fuel economy thanks to updated combustion tech.

Safety and Driver Focus

The 28.550FT-AMT is loaded with safety features like AEBS, ESC, lane departure warning, and a 360-degree camera system, not a common sight in this price bracket. FAW’s move here appears to target fleet owners trying to tick all the compliance boxes while also keeping their drivers in one piece.

Inside the cab, drivers will find some practical comforts: a built-in fridge, upgraded aircon, and a roomier setup. For those clocking endless hours behind the wheel, that could be a real bonus.

Built with Africa in Mind?

FAW says both trucks are built tough for African conditions, with reinforced chassis, modern telematics, and better NVH levels. The success of the JH6 500FT-AMT model over the past two years certainly gave them reason to keep investing in the local market.

Whether operators will buy into the new additions at scale, especially with tightening margins and rising input costs, remains to be seen. But with specs like these, it’s clear FAW is pushing to be more than just a budget-friendly option.
