FAW Trucks has unveiled the TL.X Visionary Concept Truck at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Germany, offering a glimpse at how the Chinese manufacturer believes long-haul trucks could evolve over the next decade.
Designed with 2036 in mind, the TL.X brings together modular vehicle architecture, multiple powertrain options, artificial intelligence, drive-by-wire technology and autonomous driving capability.
But perhaps the most interesting part of the concept is that FAW is not designing the truck around a single fuel or energy source.
The modular chassis is intended to accommodate diesel, battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, CNG/LNG and hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains. This could allow an operator to select the powertrain that best suits its operation today while retaining the possibility of changing technology as requirements evolve.

According to the concept’s description, this approach could potentially reduce the cost of changing from one powertrain to another by as much as 70%, rather than requiring the replacement of the entire truck.
A truck that changes with the driver
FAW has also focused heavily on the driver’s environment.

The TL.X features a fully modular cab that can be reconfigured according to the job. The interior can function as a mobile office during the working day and be transformed into a living and resting space when the driver stops.
The truck’s intelligence goes beyond basic driver assistance. FAW says the vehicle will be able to recognise problems and anticipate the information a driver may need, presenting relevant information directly through the graphical user interface instead of forcing the driver to search through multiple menus.
The concept also incorporates full drive-by-wire technology with redundant systems, predictive diagnostics and intelligent energy management linked to the planned route.

FAW is also looking towards assisted and fully autonomous driving, including platooning, where trucks can travel together in convoy to improve efficiency.
From CA10 to TL.X
The futuristic concept also has a link to FAW’s past.
FAW launched the Jiefang CA10 in 1956, described by the company as its first domestically produced vehicle. Seventy years later, the manufacturer has expanded into 115 countries and regions, with cumulative production and sales approaching 10 million vehicles.

The TL.X name reflects FAW’s vision for its future products, with the concept built around three themes: heritage renewal, personalised customisation and whole-vehicle intelligence.
Importantly, the TL.X remains a concept rather than a production truck. Its significance is in the technologies and design philosophy FAW is exploring for the next generation of commercial vehicles.
And with long-haul fleets facing rapidly changing energy, emissions and operating requirements, the idea of a truck that can evolve instead of becoming obsolete could be one of the more interesting ideas to emerge from IAA Transportation 2026.
