Five people, including a child, have been killed in another devastating crash along the N2 in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
According to a statement issued on Friday by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, the fatal collision occurred in the Manandi area within the Inkosi uMtubatuba Local Municipality.
Duma said he had received a report from the Road Traffic Inspectorate confirming that a Corsa and a side tipper truck collided on the N2, leaving four adults and one child dead at the scene. Two other occupants sustained serious injuries and were rushed for medical treatment.
“This is another horrific accident that has claimed innocent lives,” Duma said, as he extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
Emergency response teams moved swiftly to the scene, with the Road Traffic Inspectorate working alongside disaster management teams from the Inkosi uMtubatuba Local Municipality to recover the deceased and clear the roadway.

The MEC also confirmed that his office would engage directly with the affected families to provide support during this difficult time.
Importantly, an investigation into the cause of the crash has been launched. The Road Traffic Inspectorate will work in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation and SAPS to establish what led to the collision between the light motor vehicle and the heavy-duty truck.
The N2 has seen a worrying spike in serious and fatal crashes, with truckers and motorists alike once again reminded that one mistake on these busy corridors can end lives in seconds.
Further details are expected as investigations progress.
