Flood Alert as Western Cape Braces for Back-to-Back Cold Fronts

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a stern warning as multiple cold fronts are set to batter the Western Cape this weekend, bringing heavy rains, gale-force winds, and the risk of flooding.

The first and most significant cold front is expected to make landfall today, Friday, while a second front is forecast for Sunday. The Western Cape Government has urged all road users, including motorists, pedestrians, and public transport operators, to exercise extreme caution as the weather worsens.

“Unsafe road conditions are likely, with reduced visibility, waterlogged surfaces, and potential flooding of low-lying areas and bridges,” warned Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku. “Our Provincial Traffic Law Enforcement officers will be closely monitoring high-risk routes, managing road closures, and attending to incidents to ensure public safety.”

Muneera Allie, Head of Communication for the Mobility Department, echoed the call: “Every winter we face similar dangers. Flooded roads, poor visibility, and slippery surfaces increase risk for everyone. Small actions like turning on your headlights or slowing down can prevent serious accidents.”

Motorists are advised to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours.
  • Reduce speed and increase following distance.
  • Keep headlights on – even during daylight.
  • Ensure wipers, tyres, lights, and brakes are in working condition.
  • Never attempt to drive through flooded roads or low-lying bridges.
  • Allow extra time for travel as delays are likely.

For pedestrians:

  • Wear bright or reflective clothing.
  • Use pedestrian crossings and bridges.
  • Remain alert, especially in poor visibility conditions.

Traffic officials remain on high alert across the province and will continue assisting road users as needed. Travellers are urged to follow real-time updates via local traffic and weather services and to adjust their plans to avoid unnecessary risk.
