Ford Issues Recall for Transit and Mustang Models in Southern Africa

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) has announced a fresh product recall affecting selected Transit vans built between 2024 and 2025 and Mustang sports cars manufactured between 2021 and 2022.

The automaker says it is contacting affected customers directly and urging them to book their vehicles in at an authorised dealer for repairs, which will be carried out free of charge.

Motorists can also check whether their Ford is included in this or any other recall by visiting the company’s website and entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) or by calling 0860-011-022 (or +27 12 843 5824 for international callers).

Transit recall

According to FMCSA, five Transit units in South Africa are affected. The issue relates to the passenger airbag inflator filter, which may not meet the required thickness specification. While this does not affect daily driving, Ford warns that in a crash where the airbag deploys, the filter could restrict gas flow and compromise airbag performance.

Mustang recall

Ford has also flagged a risk with the low-pressure fuel pump on certain Mustang models. The company says internal contamination of the jet pump could increase friction, raising the likelihood of vapour lock. This could reduce fuel delivery to the engine and potentially cause it to stall.

In Southern Africa, the issue affects 330 Mustangs in South Africa, two in Namibia, and one in Botswana.

FMCSA says it is working to secure replacement parts. Once available, customers will be notified to schedule a service appointment for repairs at no cost.

Wider recall picture

This latest recall follows a string of technical issues flagged by Ford both locally and abroad. In July and August alone, thousands of vehicles were called back in South Africa. Industry data suggests that more than 30,000 Ford vehicles have been recalled in Southern Africa in 2025, while the parent company has recalled over 1.5 million units in the United States during the same period.
