In an industry where one mistake can have catastrophic consequences, the Formula Engen Driver of the Year (DOTY) competition is increasingly being positioned as more than just an awards event. Instead, it is being used as a measurable safety and performance benchmark within Engen’s fuel transport operations.
The latest Formula Engen Awards, held in late 2025 under the theme Fuel the Drive to Excellence, recognised top-performing drivers and operational teams across Engen’s national transport network. While the gala setting celebrated individual achievement, the underlying focus remained firmly on risk management, consistency, and compliance in fuel haulage.
At the centre of the programme are the drivers themselves. Following a multi-stage assessment process, 24 drivers advanced to the national finals, representing Engen’s highest-performing Bulk Truck Operators. From this group, Johnysa Pearce from the Cape Town terminal was named Driver of the Year in the rigid category, while Ernest Ledimo from the Johannesburg terminal took top honours in the articulated, or semi-tanker, category.

According to Engen, the DOTY process forms part of its broader Health, Safety, Environment and Quality framework, rather than operating as a once-off competition. Drivers are assessed on theoretical knowledge, vehicle inspections, defensive driving, emergency response, and compliance at customer sites, all areas that directly influence real-world incident risk.

Emergency preparedness remains a key focus, with live fire-fighting simulations and scenario-based response exercises forming part of the evaluations. These tests are designed to assess not only technical ability, but also decision-making and adherence to protocol under pressure.
Speaking at the event, Engen executives acknowledged that driver performance is shaped by more than individual skill. Depot management, workshop maintenance, scheduling accuracy, and operational discipline all play a role in reducing exposure to risk on the road.
While drivers receive the trophies, Engen has emphasised that the broader objective is consistent safety performance across its fleet. By standardising assessments and recognising best practice, the company says it aims to improve compliance, reduce incidents, and reinforce accountability throughout its transport operations.
For the wider trucking industry, the Formula Engen DOTY programme offers a case study in how structured evaluation, rather than informal recognition, can be used to strengthen fleet safety. The awards may be handed out once a year, but the systems behind them are designed to influence behaviour every day, long after the stage lights are switched off.
