Four Dead After Taxi Allegedly Ignores Stop Sign and Hits Truck in Vereeniging

Vereeniging – Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday when a collision between a minibus taxi and a truck claimed the lives of four people in Vereeniging.

Police were called to the intersection of Boy Louw Road and Houtkop Road in Vereeniging at around 01:45 following reports of a serious accident.

According to Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela, a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi collided with a Mercedes truck. Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck was travelling from Vanderbijlpark towards Three Rivers along Houtkop Road when it entered the intersection.

The taxi, coming from Sebokeng towards Vereeniging on Boy Louw Road, allegedly ignored a stop sign and struck the trailer of the truck.

“Four people were declared deceased on the scene, including three male passengers and one female, who was the driver of the taxi. Four other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for urgent medical care,” said Maxambela.

Police have opened a case of culpable homicide, and investigations are ongoing.

Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Mbwangwa Nkwashu urged all motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic rules, and respect road signs to prevent further loss of life.
