Four Killed as Runaway Truck Slams into Vehicles at Zimbabwe’s Notorious Christmas Pass

Mutare – Four people lost their lives in a devastating crash involving a haulage truck on Thursday, 6 March, along the Harare-Mutare Road at Christmas Pass.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident, which occurred around 12:40 PM near VED Mutare.

According to reports, the truck lost brakes whilst descending the Christmas Pass and crashed into four vehicles, struck four pedestrians, and overturned, landing on its roof.

Three people died on the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries at Victoria Chitepo Hospital.

Christmas Pass has long been notorious for serious accidents, especially those involving heavy trucks descending its steep curves.

Several crashes have been linked to brake failure, raising concerns about road safety measures in the area.

With this latest tragedy, there is an urgent need for the Zimbabwean government to consider installing an arrestor bed – a safety feature designed to stop runaway trucks before they cause fatal crashes.

Such a system could significantly reduce the impact of brake failures and save lives.

How many more lives must be lost before action is taken? Authorities must prioritize safety solutions for this high-risk section of the Harare-Mutare Road.
