Britstown – Four people lost their lives when an Intercity bus overturned on the N12 between Britstown and Victoria West in the early hours of Thursday morning, 31 July 2025.
According to SAPS, the accident happened around 05:20 when the bus driver reportedly lost control near a bridge, causing the vehicle to overturn. The bus was transporting 42 passengers at the time.
Tragically, four passengers — two men and two women — were declared dead at the scene. Eight others were seriously injured, including one man, six women, and an infant girl. The remaining 30 passengers sustained minor injuries.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and assisted in stabilising the injured before transporting them to nearby medical facilities. A second Intercity bus was dispatched to collect the passengers who were able to continue their journey.
The South African Police Service in Britstown has opened a case of culpable homicide and is investigating the cause of the crash.
As the investigation continues, authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly during early morning hours when fatigue and visibility can be factors.
