Four people have lost their lives in a devastating crash involving a truck and two minibus taxis on the N4 Toll Road near Rivulets outside Mbombela on Thursday, 23 July 2026.
According to preliminary information released by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the crash occurred when a truck collided with the rear of a minibus taxi that was towing a trailer.
The impact reportedly caused the truck driver to lose control. The truck then swerved into the path of oncoming traffic, where it collided head-on with another minibus taxi travelling from the direction of Mbombela.
Three of the victims were passengers in the oncoming minibus taxi. The vehicle burst into flames after the collision, leaving the occupants trapped inside. Authorities said the victims were burned beyond recognition.
A fourth victim was found lying on the roadway. Officials have not yet confirmed which vehicle the person was travelling in, although it is believed the victim may have been ejected during the impact.
No additional injuries have been reported at this stage.
The truck was travelling from Johannesburg towards Mbombela when the crash occurred. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision.
