Four killed in Memel road truck and taxi crash in KZN IMG 20210204 175339

Four people have been killed and several others injured in a collision between a truck and a minibus taxi on the R34 Memel road outside Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal.

The accident happened around midday today (4 February 2021) about 20 km outside Newcastle.

A police source said: “A portion of the road was closed off at Impala Road from both the Newcastle and Memel directions. The collision was between a taxi and truck. The taxi apparently lost control and veered across the road.

“Unfortunately, four people lost their lives. The seriously injured drivers of the taxi and truck were taken to the Madadeni Provincial Hospital.” said the source.

A witness told SA Trucker that the Ni-Da Transport truck driver tried in vain to avoid the taxi after it veered onto his lane.

“I saw the taxi veer onto his lane, he tried to avoid hitting the taxi head-on and ended up crashing into its side,” said the witness.
