A graphic video circulating on social media appears to show a man being struck and run over by an eThekwini Municipality water tanker during what seems to have been a tense confrontation involving members of the public.
SA Trucker has viewed the video, but has not been able to independently verify the exact location, date or circumstances surrounding the incident. It also remains unclear whether the man survived.
The footage shows a municipal water tanker stopped on a roadway while a commotion unfolds nearby. Several people can be seen around the truck, with what appears to be a heated exchange taking place between the driver and members of the public.
A man is then seen on the opposite side of the road before walking towards the moving truck as it begins to pull away. Moments later, he appears to be struck and falls beneath the vehicle.
The truck comes to a stop shortly afterwards, apparently after the driver realises something has happened. The footage then appears to show the vehicle reversing slightly before moving forward again, after which the man is left lying motionless on the road.
From the video alone, it is not possible to determine what the driver could see from inside the cab or whether he believed he was in danger from the crowd. Likewise, the events leading up to the confrontation remain unknown.
The authenticity of the footage and the circumstances that resulted in the incident have not yet been independently confirmed. At the time of publication, SA Trucker had also not established where in eThekwini the incident occurred.
Should the footage prove authentic, investigators are likely to examine the sequence of events leading up to the collision, the actions of everyone involved, and whether any criminal offences were committed.
