Grindrod Logistics has announced a precautionary suspension of operations across most of its South African facilities and transport networks from 30 June to 1 July 2026, citing concerns around planned national protest action and potential disruptions to supply chains.
The company issued an operational update to customers, warning that rapidly changing conditions could impact the safe movement of vehicles, cargo and personnel with little or no warning.
According to the notice, Grindrod Logistics will temporarily suspend operations at the majority of its facilities from 16:00 on 29 June until 08:00 on 1 July 2026.
The decision follows what the company described as a comprehensive risk assessment conducted ahead of the anticipated national action and related shutdown activities expected across parts of South Africa.
No Collections or Deliveries During Shutdown
Grindrod Logistics has confirmed that all transport operations will be suspended from 16:00 on 29 June 2026 until 08:00 on 1 July 2026. During this period, no collections or deliveries will take place across the company’s transport network.
The suspension forms part of precautionary measures being implemented ahead of anticipated national strike action and related shutdown activity planned for 30 June.
For truck drivers and transport operators, the announcement raises concerns about possible congestion, delivery delays and restricted access to key logistics hubs during the period.
Grindrod said the safety and wellbeing of its employees, contractors and customers remains its top priority. The company indicated that previous experiences during periods of civil unrest and disruption have shown that conditions on the ground can change rapidly, creating risks for drivers and freight movements.
The temporary shutdown is expected to affect warehousing operations, cargo handling activities and transport movements linked to the company’s South African network.

Sites Expected to Remain Operational
The following facilities are currently expected to remain operational, subject to ongoing monitoring and real-time risk assessments:
- Kempston
- Maitland
- Paarden Eiland
Grindrod said business continuity plans have already been activated across its network, with teams working directly with customers to prioritise critical cargo and minimise disruption where possible.
The company added that non-operational teams will remain available remotely throughout the shutdown period to support customers and coordinate urgent requirements.
Customers with time-sensitive freight have been advised to engage directly with their Grindrod representatives as the situation develops.
