Hair-raising footage of a near head-on collision involving two trucks has surfaced online, sending chills through the trucking community.
The video, recorded from the dashcam of one of the involved trucks, shows the driver cruising at a steady speed with his brights on along Namibia’s B10 route near Rundu in the Kavango East Region. Moments later, headlights from another truck appear in the distance. In true trucker spirit, the driver dims his lights, which is a common sign of respect between professional drivers.
But what happens next nearly ends in disaster. The oncoming truck, a side tipper interlink, is seen drifting dangerously onto the wrong side of the road. Whether due to fatigue or another cause, the driver appears to have lost control of his rig. With split-second reflexes, the trucker recording the footage swerves sharply off the tar to the left-hand side of the road, narrowly avoiding what could have been a fatal head-on crash.
By sheer luck and skill, the surface off the road was even enough for him to maintain control and bring his truck to a safe stop. It’s unclear from the footage whether the vehicles made slight contact, but what’s certain is that a far more devastating collision was averted.
This terrifying moment serves as yet another reminder of the dangers truck drivers face daily. Even when doing everything right, they can suddenly find themselves in harm’s way due to the mistakes or fatigue of others.
