Hawks Foil Alleged Diesel Theft Operation in Meyerton, 11 Suspects Nabbed

Eleven suspects, aged between 27 and 46, have been arrested during a Hawks-led operation at a fuel plant in Meyerton in the Vaal, after authorities intercepted what is believed to have been a planned diesel theft operation.

According to a statement issued by the South African Police Service, members of the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section received intelligence about a robbery that was allegedly set to take place at the fuel facility. The information was operationalised, leading law enforcement officers to place the premises under surveillance.

During the operation, investigators observed two fuel tankers entering the property. Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the fuel plant had been placed under administration.

Authorities moved in before any diesel could be removed from the site, leading to the arrest of all 11 suspects.

Among those arrested are two security guards who were employed to protect the premises. Investigators allege that the guards were working together with the remaining suspects in the attempted fuel theft operation.

Hawks national spokesperson Christopher Singo said the suspects are made up of both South African citizens and foreign nationals.

“So the two security officials, they were working to guard that particular place. But from the information that we got, they are in cahoots with these nine other suspects who came to that premises,” Singo explained.

“And out of that, there are foreign nationals that are involved and others which are the citizens of this country. So it’s a combination of different groups of people that are involved.”

Singo added that, at this stage, investigators have not found evidence linking police officers to the incident, but the matter remains under investigation.

Fuel theft remains a growing concern in South Africa’s transport and logistics sector, with criminal syndicates increasingly targeting depots, pipelines and fuel tankers. The incident in Meyerton once again highlights the risks facing the fuel supply chain and the ongoing battle against organised crime in the industry.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon on charges linked to theft and organised criminal activity.
