Heartbreak as Missing Truck Driver Found Dead After Devastating Floods Near Wolseley

Heartbreak has swept through South Africa’s trucking community after police confirmed that missing truck driver Poovin Narainsamy has been found dead, bringing a tragic end to days of uncertainty following devastating flash floods near Wolseley in the Western Cape.

Narainsamy was swept away earlier this month when extreme flooding along the R46 turned roads into fast-moving water channels during severe storms that battered the region.

His Scania R580 truck was dragged downstream by the violent floodwaters on 11 May.

Body found on riverbank after extensive search

Police confirmed that a body was discovered on Saturday lying on a riverbank on a farm in the Wolseley area.

Forensic pathology testing later confirmed that the remains were those of Poovin Narainsamy, officially ending the search operation that had stretched over several days.

Search and rescue teams, police, and community volunteers had been combing riverbanks, farmland edges, and flood-affected areas since the truck was first swept away, but no leads had emerged until the discovery this weekend.

Floodwaters that changed everything

The incident unfolded during intense rainfall that caused rivers to burst their banks across parts of the Western Cape.

The R46 near Wolseley became one of the worst-affected routes, with floodwaters rising rapidly and sweeping away heavy vehicles, including Narainsamy’s truck.

His Scania was later found severely damaged downstream, a stark indication of the force and speed of the water that moved through the area that night.

Family and trucking community in mourning

The confirmation of his death has left his family devastated and brought painful closure to a search that had gripped both loved ones and the wider trucking industry.

His employer, Ubuntu Logistics, had earlier expressed growing concern as days passed without any sign of him, while search teams continued working through difficult and dangerous terrain.

Across South Africa, truck drivers have been sharing messages of support and grief, describing the incident as another painful reminder of the risks drivers face on rural and weather-prone routes.

Remembered on and off the road

Friends and fellow drivers say Narainsamy’s death highlights the harsh reality of extreme weather conditions that can turn ordinary routes into deadly zones within minutes.

Authorities have urged motorists and transport operators to exercise extreme caution during heavy rainfall, especially in flood-prone rural corridors.

For the family, the search has ended. But for those who knew him, the silence left behind carries a weight that will not be easily lifted.
