Here’s How Much You’ll Be Paying for Diesel and Petrol in May 2025

South African motorists are finally catching a break at the pumps this May, thanks to a welcome drop in both petrol and diesel prices.

Following the official announcement by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), the fuel price adjustments will kick in on Wednesday, 7 May 2025.

The cuts come after global oil prices slumped due to fears of a global economic slowdown, sparked in part by rising geopolitical tensions and new tariffs introduced by the US.

Here’s a quick look at how much you’ll now be paying at the pumps:

Inland prices:

  • Petrol 93: R21.29 per litre (down from R21.51)
  • Petrol 95: R21.40 per litre (down from R21.62)
  • Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): R18.90 per litre (down from R19.32)
  • Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): R18.94 per litre (down from R19.35)

Coastal prices:

  • Petrol 93: R20.50 per litre (down from R20.72)
  • Petrol 95: R20.61 per litre (down from R20.83)
  • Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): R18.11 per litre (down from R18.53)
  • Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): R18.18 per litre (down from R18.59)

While diesel prices are listed as wholesale and can vary depending on the retailer, consumers across the country should see some relief from recent high fuel costs.

However, it’s not all good news — the price of LPGAS has increased by 46 cents per kilogram, and that could impact households that rely on gas for cooking or heating.

This month’s fuel price cuts were helped by a drop in the average Brent crude oil price from $71.04 to $66.40, which offset the effects of a weaker rand.

Despite the currency’s slip, the global oil slump provided just enough of a buffer to bring prices down.

Whether you’re filling up for the school run or a weekend getaway, the savings should make a noticeable difference at the till.
