Hijacked Truck Recovered in Brits, 3 Suspects Arrested

Three suspects were arrested, and a hijacked truck and trailer loaded with goods valued at over R2 million were recovered through a joint effort by the Brits Trio Task Team, the Operational Co-ordination Centre (OCC), and the crime intelligence division.

According to police spokesperson Col Adéle Myburgh, the breakthrough followed up on information received by crime intelligence in the Bojanala District about a group suspected of involvement in truck hijackings.

The team conducted surveillance over several days at a storage facility in Rietfontein, near Hartbeespoort Dam. On Thursday afternoon, they observed a truck pulling a trailer entering the premises, accompanied by a Toyota bakkie.

Myburgh said the team continued monitoring the premises and eventually detained three men who were using a forklift to offload the goods from the trailer. The suspects were also found to be in possession of a signal jammer.

Investigators traced the truck, trailer, and goods back to the owner and determined that the truck had been hijacked earlier this month in Olievenhoutbosch, Gauteng.

The suspects, aged 20, 24, and 36, are set to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen goods.

Acting North West police commissioner Maj-Gen Patrick Asaneng commended the team for their collaborative efforts and their ongoing work to address crime in the province.
