Hino South Africa has issued a recall affecting 6,739 units of its 500 Series trucks sold between 2017 and 2024, due to concerns over the onboard parking brake release spanner.
The recall has been initiated after it was discovered that certain vehicles were either delivered without the correct spanner or fitted with an incorrect version. This tool is essential for manually releasing the parking brake in the event of a failure in the automatic release mechanism.
The affected units include:
- 77 fully imported trucks that were supplied without the necessary spanner.
- 6,662 locally assembled SKD (Semi Knocked Down) trucks that were equipped with an incorrect version of the spanner.
While no incidents or complaints related to the issue have been reported, Hino has emphasised that the recall is a precautionary measure to maintain the brand’s commitment to safety and reliability.

All affected vehicle owners will be contacted directly and requested to take their trucks to an authorised Hino dealership. There, the toolkits will be inspected and, where necessary, the correct spanner will be installed at no cost to the customer.
Hino South Africa stated that this proactive action is in line with its policy of prioritising the operational readiness and safety of all its vehicles.
Owners seeking more information are encouraged to contact their nearest Hino dealership or visit the company’s official website.
