Historic Milestone as Pilot Olwethu Mtsewu-Sisilana Steers MSC Nicola Mastro into Ngqura Port

The Port of Ngqura has not only celebrated the arrival of its largest-ever container vessel, the MSC Nicola Mastro, but also witnessed a remarkable achievement in the maritime industry, with female Pilot Olwethu Mtsewu-Sisilana successfully guiding the 400-meter-long vessel into the port.

Mtsewu-Sisilana, a proud daughter of the Eastern Cape from Qanda Village in Xesi, made history as the first woman to pilot one of the world’s largest container vessels into the Port of Ngqura.

Her skillful handling of the MSC Nicola Mastro – a vessel with a beam of 61 meters and a tidal draft of 16.1 meters – demonstrates not only her exceptional expertise but also the increasing representation of women in industries traditionally dominated by men, such as maritime, logistics, engineering, and infrastructure.

Her achievement is a symbol of empowerment and progress, showcasing that when women are empowered to lead, they can break barriers and accomplish extraordinary feats. From her rural roots to navigating global trade routes, Mtsewu-Sisilana’s journey is a testament to the world-class talent that the Eastern Cape continues to foster.

The Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) proudly congratulated Pilot Olwethu Mtsewu-Sisilana for her ground-breaking accomplishment. “This achievement is more than just a milestone in maritime history – it is a proud moment for all women in the maritime and logistics sectors, as well as for the Eastern Cape as a whole,” said a spokesperson for DEDEAT.

Mtsewu-Sisilana’s success has sparked excitement and pride throughout the region, inspiring future generations of women to pursue careers in maritime and other critical industries. As the MSC Nicola Mastro sails into history, it carries with it the legacy of a woman who helped chart a course for the future of Eastern Cape women in global trade.

This achievement serves as a powerful reminder that with the right opportunities and support, no goal is too distant, and no sea too vast to navigate.
