The Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 has been closed to all traffic following a dramatic bus explosion and fire inside the tunnel late last night.
According to reports received by SA Trucker, the bus exploded and burst into flames just before midnight, sending thick black smoke billowing through the tunnel. The cause of the explosion is still unknown, and authorities are on scene investigating the incident.
Truckers who arrived shortly after the blast described the situation as chaotic and terrifying. “You couldn’t see anything inside. The smoke was so thick, it was impossible to tell where you were going,” one driver told SA Trucker.
Witnesses reported hearing people screaming and crying as they tried to escape the tunnel, adding to the chaos of the scene.
Emergency services rushed to the site and immediately shut down the tunnel to prevent further danger. The number of casualties remains unclear at this stage, with rescue teams still assessing the situation and searching the area.
