The Huguenot Tunnel Closure on the N1 has caused major disruptions for truckers, bus operators, and motorists travelling between Worcester and Cape Town this weekend. Authorities say the tunnel will remain closed until further notice after sustaining structural damage in a bus fire incident in the early hours of 4 October 2025.
The Western Cape Department of Mobility has urged road users to plan ahead and use designated detours while engineers carry out a full safety assessment. The bus fire, caused by an electrical fault, filled the tunnel with thick smoke and raised safety concerns that will keep the vital freight route closed for at least the rest of the weekend.
To keep freight and passenger traffic moving, the following alternative routes have been recommended:

🚛 From Worcester to Cape Town: Use the Wolseley – Wellington – Paarl route and rejoin the N1.

🚛 From Cape Town to Worcester: Travel via Paarl – Wolseley – Worcester.
🛣️ N2 Alternative: Access the N2 through Worcester and Villiersdorp as a longer but effective bypass option.

⚠️ Important Warning for Heavy Vehicles:
Authorities have stressed that Bainskloof Pass is only open to light motor vehicles and MUST NOT be used by trucks, buses, or abnormal loads. Heavy vehicles attempting to use the pass risk getting stuck, damaging their vehicles, or causing serious accidents on the narrow mountain road.
Additionally, Du Toitskloof Pass (R101) remains closed for construction until 1 November 2025, further limiting route options in the area.
“We confirm that Huguenot Tunnel is currently closed due to structural damage following a bus incident. Please use the recommended routes and avoid restricted passes. Updates will be issued as soon as additional information is available,” the Western Cape Mobility Department spokesperson Muneera Allie said.
SA Trucker will continue to provide route updates and reopening news as it happens. Truckers are urged to allow for extra travel time, avoid Bainskloof Pass entirely, and monitor traffic alerts closely.
