Huguenot Tunnel’s Structure Intact but Critical Repairs Needed Before Reopening – SANRAL

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has assured motorists that the structural integrity of the Huguenot Tunnel remains intact following last Friday night’s dramatic bus fire, but significant repair work is still required before the vital N1 route can safely reopen.

Engineering teams completed comprehensive assessments over the weekend, confirming that the tunnel’s ceiling and roadway sustained no major structural damage. However, the intense heat from the blaze severely damaged several wall panels, electrical cabling, and lighting systems — all of which now need to be replaced.

“While the core structure of the tunnel remains sound, certain components were exposed to extreme heat and are beyond repair. These must be replaced before the tunnel can safely accommodate traffic again,” SANRAL said in a statement.

The agency reiterated that work is progressing at pace and that it aims to complete the necessary repairs within the next two weeks, though the reopening date will depend on the final scope of the restoration.

Motorists are being diverted to alternative routes, including the temporarily reopened Du Toitskloof Pass, as traffic authorities work to ease congestion along the N1 corridor.

Experts say the incident highlights the importance of planned safety upgrades already underway at the tunnel. Professor Richard Walls, Head of the Fire Engineering Research Unit at Stellenbosch University, said the project to construct a second bore and enhance fire protection systems will significantly improve safety and resilience in the future.

“One of the biggest developments is the addition of a second tunnel, which will allow one bore to stay open if the other is compromised. Fire suppression systems are also being installed to better handle incidents like this,” Walls explained.

The Huguenot Tunnel — a key link between Cape Town and the interior — will remain closed until all safety-critical systems are restored.
