More details have emerged about the fatal crash that shut down the R31 at Koopmansfontein on Friday afternoon.
Authorities have now confirmed that the accident, which happened at around 12h40, involved three side tipper trucks and claimed the life of an innocent driver who had no part in causing the collision.
A source who was travelling behind two of the trucks told SA Trucker how the tragedy unfolded.
According to him, one of the side tippers overtook his truck, then immediately attempted to overtake another truck ahead. While the driver was still committed to that risky move, another truck approached from the oncoming lane.
With the wet, soaked road surface and limited space to react, the overtaking driver had no time to correct his mistake. The two trucks collided head-on with massive force.

The cab of the overtaking truck detached completely and was thrown into the bush, leaving the driver shaken but alive. The oncoming truck was not so fortunate, its cab crushed beyond recognition, trapping the driver inside.
Emergency services arrived to find the innocent driver already deceased. He had no chance. He was simply coming along in his lane, minding his trip, when someone else’s reckless decision ended his life.
Truckers on the scene described the conditions as rainy and slippery, adding that overtaking in such weather should be avoided at all costs.
It’s a heartbreaking reminder of how one bad judgement call can destroy families and leave the industry mourning another brother on the road.
