Intercape has confirmed that one of its long-distance coaches travelling from Cape Town to Mthatha was involved in a serious crash on the N1 near Touws River on the evening of Monday, 1 September 2025.
The incident occurred around 22:15, approximately 9km north of Touws River. At the time, 46 passengers were onboard the coach.
According to Intercape, video footage from the bus’s onboard camera revealed that the third-party vehicle, a bakkie, veered into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the coach.
“The swift reactions of our professional driver led to the safe stopping of the coach and passengers,” the company said in a statement.

Two passengers, along with the driver, sustained minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene. Intercape dispatched a replacement coach to ensure all passengers were able to complete their journey.
The company extended condolences to the family of the bakkie driver, who tragically died in the crash, and expressed gratitude to emergency services for their quick response and assistance.
