Intercape Unveils Southern Africa’s First Marcopolo G8 DD 1800 on Volvo B510R

Intercape has just raised the bar for long-distance passenger transport in Southern Africa, bringing in the region’s first Marcopolo G8 Double Decker (DD) 1800 mounted on a Volvo B510R Euro 6 8×2 chassis. For a country where buses are the backbone of intercity travel, this is a serious upgrade, not just a cosmetic one.

It’s also the world’s first right-hand drive Marcopolo Paradiso G8 Double Decker, marking a major milestone not just for the company, but for the broader Southern African passenger transport sector.

The new flagship unit, branded under the Intercape Megaliner fleet, brings serious muscle and next-level efficiency to long-distance routes. This isn’t just another coach rolling into service, it’s a clear statement of intent from one of the country’s leading operators.

At 15 metres long, the G8 DD 1800 is built for high-capacity luxury travel, capable of carrying up to 80 passengers across its double-deck configuration. The 8×2 axle setup improves weight distribution, stability, and overall ride quality, especially on long-haul and cross-border routes.

Power comes from Volvo’s latest Euro 6 D13 engine platform, delivering improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and quieter operation. In a climate of rising diesel costs and increasing environmental pressure, this is a move that makes both operational and strategic sense.

Inside, the G8 takes things to another level. The coach features a fully modernised interior with premium finishes, improved seat ergonomics, USB charging points, onboard entertainment, and enhanced climate control across both decks. Marcopolo has also focused heavily on noise reduction, giving passengers a noticeably quieter and more refined ride.

Safety remains a key highlight. The Volvo B510R platform includes advanced driver assistance systems such as electronic stability control, advanced braking systems, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and collision mitigation support. These features are particularly valuable for overnight and long-distance operations.

From the driver’s seat, the experience has also been upgraded. A modern digital dashboard, improved visibility, and Volvo’s I-Shift automated transmission all contribute to reduced fatigue and better overall control on the road.
