About the Role

A liquid bulk tanker transport operation in Durban is looking for an experienced, highly organised and proactive Tanker Fleet Controller to join its operations team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day control and coordination of the tanker fleet, ensuring trucks and drivers are managed efficiently, loads are delivered safely and on time, and operational and compliance requirements are maintained.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who can work under pressure, make quick decisions and communicate effectively with drivers, customers, loading facilities and management.

Key Responsibilities

• Control and monitor the daily movement of the tanker fleet.
• Plan and coordinate vehicle and driver movements according to customer requirements.
• Allocate loads to suitable vehicles and drivers.
• Monitor trucks from loading through to delivery and return to depot.
• Maintain regular communication with drivers throughout each trip.
• Monitor delivery schedules and proactively address delays and operational problems.
• Liaise with customers, loading sites and offloading facilities.
• Monitor driver hours, vehicle utilisation and turnaround times.
• Ensure drivers comply with company procedures, customer requirements and road regulations.
• Coordinate breakdowns, accidents, delays and other incidents.
• Ensure trip documentation, delivery notes, permits and related paperwork are correctly completed.
• Monitor vehicle tracking/GPS systems and investigate unnecessary deviations, unauthorised stops or delays.
• Coordinate vehicle maintenance requirements and communicate defects to the relevant department.
• Assist with planning around road closures, traffic disruptions, strikes, adverse weather and other operational risks.
• Ensure hazardous/liquid bulk loads are transported according to applicable safety and operational procedures.
• Escalate operational, safety and compliance issues to management.
• Maintain accurate daily fleet and operational records.
• Participate in after-hours/emergency operational support when required.

Minimum Requirements

• 3–5 years’ experience in fleet control, transport operations or logistics.
• Previous tanker, liquid bulk, chemical or hazardous goods experience will be an advantage.
• Strong knowledge of South African road transport operations.
• Experience working with truck drivers and managing a fleet.
• Good knowledge of route planning and trip scheduling.
• Computer literate, including Microsoft Excel.
• Experience with vehicle tracking/GPS systems.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong organisational and administrative abilities.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet strict delivery deadlines.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Willingness to work shifts, weekends, public holidays and after-hours.

Advantageous

• Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Goods experience.
• Experience with chemical or liquid bulk tankers.
• Dangerous Goods Driver/Operator knowledge.
• Experience with transport or fleet management software.
• Knowledge of vehicle compliance and South African road transport legislation.
• Previous experience dealing with major industrial customers.
