President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the country will go back to Level 3 from midnight on Tuesday 29 December 2020 in a bid to curb the Covid-19 resurgence rocking the country at the moment.
Ramaphosa says the liquor industry is a major employer. “Our priority at this time, however, is to save lives. Alcohol-related incidents are putting pressure on our healthcare system.”
The sale of alcohol is no longer permitted.
This regulation will be reviewed within the next few weeks and will see whether they should lift this curb.
Nightclubs and bars that sell alcohol will not be allowed to operate, he says.
The new measures will be enforced until 15 January 2021.
Ramaphosa stated that urgent measures to avoid a collapse of the health system needed to be taken.
These include the closure of alcohol retailers and wholesalers. Transporting of alcohol will also be prohibited during the new restrictions.
He added that alcohol related casualties from accidents and violence exerted a lot of unnecessary pressure on the health system hence the need to ban it.
