China unveils KargoBot Space, a truck with no cab and nowhere for a driver to sit

China has unveiled a very different kind of truck – one that has done away with the cab completely.

There is no driver’s seat. No steering wheel. No windscreen. And there is nowhere for a human driver to climb into.

The KargoBot Space 2.0 is an electric, Level 4 autonomous freight vehicle designed around a simple idea: if the truck does not need a driver, why build a cab?

That radical approach could have major implications for the future of long-haul trucking.

KargoBot, a Beijing-based autonomous freight company that originated from DiDi’s autonomous driving business, presented the production version of Space 2.0 at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. The company describes it as a “transport robot” rather than simply an autonomous truck.

Removing the cab creates more room for freight

For truckers, one of the most interesting parts of the KargoBot isn’t the cameras, computers or artificial intelligence.

It’s the space where the cab used to be.

KargoBot says removing the cab increases available cargo space by between 25% and 35%, while effective payload capacity increases by between 10% and 25%, depending on the configuration. The vehicle can also accommodate different 20-, 30- and 40-foot cargo containers.

In other words, the truck’s designers have taken space normally occupied by the driver, bunk, dashboard and cab structure and turned the vehicle into a dedicated freight machine.

That could make every kilometre more productive.

It is designed to keep running

KargoBot Space 2.0 is electric and uses a battery-swapping system rather than relying solely on conventional plug-in charging.

Earlier specifications released for the Space platform listed a battery capacity of up to 1,026 kWh and more than 800 km of claimed range per battery swap. KargoBot says rapid battery changes can allow very high daily utilisation, with reports indicating potential autonomous operation of up to 2,000 km in a day.

That is important because charging downtime is one of the biggest challenges facing heavy electric trucks.

A truck that can pull into a swapping station, exchange its battery and get back to work could spend considerably less time standing around.

More than a concept truck

This isn’t simply an autonomous truck being shown off at a motor show.

KargoBot says more than 400 autonomous trucks are already in operation, with tens of millions of kilometres accumulated. The company has set its sights on pushing L4 autonomous freight into the 10,000-truck era over the next three years.

The company’s technology is also being developed for convoy operations, where autonomous trucks can work together and share information while travelling on the same route.

That could eventually allow freight operators to move multiple loads with far fewer human drivers involved.

But what happens when something goes wrong?

This is where things get really interesting for professional truck drivers.

A truck driver isn’t only there to steer a rig down the highway.

Drivers deal with blown tyres, mechanical problems, difficult loading sites, roadworks, traffic officers, accidents, angry motorists, changing weather, dodgy roads and countless unexpected situations that aren’t necessarily written into a route plan.

A cabless autonomous truck has to deal with those problems in a completely different way.

KargoBot’s answer is a combination of sensors, autonomous driving computers, remote monitoring and digital fleet management.

The company says its vehicles use multiple sensing systems to monitor their surroundings, while its KargoCloud platform can manage transport orders, routes, vehicle status and faults remotely.

That means the human isn’t necessarily disappearing from the operation completely.

Instead, the human could move out of the cab and into a control centre, potentially supervising multiple trucks rather than driving one.

The big question for trucking

The KargoBot Space represents a much bigger change than simply replacing a diesel engine with an electric motor.

It changes the basic design of the truck itself.

Traditional heavy trucks are built around the assumption that a person will sit behind the wheel.

KargoBot has turned that assumption on its head.

If autonomous freight becomes reliable and commercially viable, future trucks may no longer look like the trucks professional drivers know today.

And that is perhaps the most remarkable thing about KargoBot Space.

China hasn’t just built a truck that can drive itself. It has built one with no place for the driver to sit in the first place.
