KZN declares war on ‘blessers’

KwaZulu-Natal is declaring war on ‘blessers’ – a colloquial term for what are often also referred to as ‘sugar daddies’ — for misleading young girls and making them pregnant.

That’s the warning from KZN premier Senzo Mchunu and health MEC Sbongiseni Dhlomo who will lead a campaign in Umtubatuba‚ north of Richards Bay on Friday to flush out blessers.

Ndabezinhle Sibiya‚ spokesman for the premier said the campaign was driven by “alarming statistics“.

“In the area the premier discovered alarming statistics. Out of about 13‚106 birth or deliveries during 2015/16 financial year 1‚777 were teenagers under 18 years. Clearly the blessers are running amok in the area.”

He said in addition there were 46 incomplete abortions and 10 maternal deaths.

Sibiya said: “The area must be liberated from the blessers who appear to be misleading young girls and making them pregnant.”

He said the premier‚ health MEC and other executive members will participate in the march against illegal abortions and later address community members.
