A KwaZulu-Natal motorist has had his driver’s licence suspended and been fined R30 000 after being caught speeding at a staggering 172km/h in a 120km/h zone.
The driver, identified as Musa Trevor Mnguni, was arrested on 10 December 2025 by the Road Traffic Inspectorate team based in Park Rynie during the province’s #NenzaniLaEzweni enforcement campaign. He later appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court, where the court imposed a fine of R30 000 or eight months’ imprisonment. His licence was also suspended.
The case is being described as a strong warning to reckless motorists across the province. Authorities say the message is simple: a driver’s licence can be taken away if a motorist becomes a danger to others on the road.
The Park Rynie RTI unit has gained attention for its strict enforcement approach and use of advanced speed monitoring technology. Officials say their operations are targeting all offenders equally, regardless of profession or status.
The development comes amid ongoing national debate around traffic enforcement powers, particularly after a recent Western Cape High Court ruling found that speeding is not classified as a Schedule 1 offence, and that certain arrests related to speeding were unlawful in that matter.
However, KZN authorities have indicated they will continue enforcing road safety laws under existing provisions of the Criminal Procedure Act.

Speeding remains one of the leading contributing factors to serious and fatal crashes in South Africa. At 172km/h, stopping distance increases dramatically, and the margin for error becomes almost non-existent.
With road fatalities still a major concern in the province, enforcement teams appear determined to clamp down hard.
Motorists travelling through KZN have been urged to stick to the limits, because the days of “just a fine and carry on” may be fading fast.
