KZN motorists face fines as deadline nears for new licence plates

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has reminded motorists that they have until 30 November 2025 to migrate to the new vehicle licence plate system or face penalties.

According to the department, driving with old licence plates after the deadline will be considered an offence, as the old numbering format will be deemed invalid. Motorists found non-compliant will face fines under the National Road Traffic Act.

Vehicle owners are urged to visit their nearest licensing offices to have their number plates converted. The department added that motorists who renew their vehicle licences before the deadline will automatically be issued with new registration numbers under the new system.

The provincial department rolled out the new numbering format to address the shortage of available registration numbers and to align KwaZulu-Natal with the national vehicle registration system.

“Failure to migrate timeously will lead to members of the public getting fined as this will become a violation of the National Road Traffic Act,” the Department of Transport said in a statement.

Motorists are also being advised to notify relevant institutions once their licence numbers change, including their insurance provider, bank or vehicle financier, and tracking company, as well as fuel card providers, to avoid any administrative or claim issues.

For more information, motorists can visit their local licensing office or contact the KZN Department of Transport directly.
