KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu has resigned as KwaZulu-Natal premier‚ following the ANC’s National Working Committee decision.
Reports on Friday suggested that Mchunu had been given until Monday to go.
The premier‚ once a staunch ally of President Jacob Zuma‚ lost his seat as provincial chairman to Sihle Zikhalala in November last year and since then Zikhalala’s supporters have openly campaigned to remove him as premier.
Apparently at one point in the Friday meeting Social Development MEC Weziwe Thusi cried openly and accused Mchunu of frustrating her work.
ANC sources said Mchunu refused to work with Zikhalala’s people.
Mchunu’s axing would give Zuma’s supporters powerful leverage ahead of the local government elections.
Mchunu cancelled his attendance at public events‚ including a prayer day with Zuma in Durban on Saturday.
