Two high-profile professionals, a lawyer and an auditor, were arrested this weekend for excessive speeding on the N2 near Park Rynie, and MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, says the law is coming down hard on reckless drivers.
In a statement issued by Duma’s office, he commended the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team stationed in Park Rynie for their swift action in enforcing the department’s Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense, and Alufakwa campaign.
The most shocking of the weekend arrests was that of Mr Monde Nzima, a lawyer reportedly driving a blue Mercedes-Benz. Nzima was clocked at 222km/h in a 120km/h zone while travelling from Umtata. He failed to stop when instructed and was chased down by RTI officers before being apprehended. He was later granted R3000 bail at Scottburgh Police Station.
Meanwhile, Mr Vinnie Govender, an auditor from Reservoir Hills, was arrested for doing 177km/h in the same zone while driving a Hyundai. He was released on R1500 bail.
Another motorist was also taken into custody after being caught speeding at 178km/h. He remains in the holding cells pending bail.

“These arrests send a clear message – nobody is above the law,” said MEC Duma. “Professionals like lawyers and auditors should be setting the standard, not breaking the law with such recklessness.”
Duma highlighted how speeding contributes to fatal crashes that leave families devastated, leading to loss of income, disability, and long-term socio-economic struggles.
“As a department, we’re fully committed to keeping our roads safe. Our RTI officers are doing a stellar job, and we’ll continue tightening the screws on those who think they can use our roads as race tracks.”
