Leaked audio clip reveals that ATDF-ASA may resort to violence again

The ATDF-ASA seems to be contemplating going back to its old ways of violence if a leaked audio clip allegedly from one of the leaders is anything to go by.

ATDF-ASA Secretary-General Sfiso Nyathi, however, dismissed the audio saying the person who recorded the audio clip was not their member.

The audio clip comes after the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRLI) took a firm stand against the ATDF-ASA in which the council and it’s partners refused to be bullied by the forum.

During violence in the past years, widely attributed to the forum, many truck drivers were killed either by being petrol bombed or being shot. Several trucks and cargo were also burned as the forum reigned terror on the trucking industry.

The attacks would occur after messages from people claiming to be ATDF-ASA members threatening to kill foreign truck drivers in a bid to force them to quit their jobs.

The attackers, however, pounced on any truck driver leaving casualties on both local and immigrant drivers.

The ATDF-ASA has never admitted to threatening or attacking foreigners but attacks would happen after their members threatened violence against foreign drivers. ATDF-ASA leaders have never publicly asked their members not to threaten foreign drivers with violence.

In the recent audio, a member of the forum can be heard beginning his address by chanting the infamous ATDF-ASA slogan before relaying his message.

Losely translated from isiZulu, the member says,

“Hey guys, it’s bad. I see the response from bargaining council. No guys, when I look at the guy who wrote this, that Musa Ndlovu, he has no respect. You see it means all our grievances were not heard because we are not registered. Why, in the first place, did they take our memorandum and sign it? They were not supposed to take it and tell us it’s because we are not registered. Because now, if we raise our grievances and they say we are not mandated to do so, that is a problem. We have no option now but if we see a foreigner we should attack him and burn the truck. I know you guys don’t want to burn trucks but the truck should burn so that it can be seen that we are serious.”

Speaking to SA Trucker, Nyathi said that his forum members are not violent people and will not resort to attacks as mentioned in the audio clip.

“Members know of our position which is taking the legal route. We are consulting with our lawyers to see how best we can fight the system, ” Nyathi said.

He added that at no point was it suggested that we attack anyone.

“We are well known for fighting for the rights of the South African truckers hence anyone can claim to be our member in their audio even when they are not. We have never been violent and will never be,” Nyathi concluded.
