Lebombo Border Post Closed Again as Mozambican Election Protests Intensify

Truckers on the Maputo Corridor, take note: Operations at the Lebombo port of entry in Mpumalanga have been temporarily suspended as protests intensify on the Mozambican side.

The unrest stems from claims of electoral fraud in last month’s Mozambican elections.

According to Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner Michael Masiapato, Wednesday’s decision to halt operations came following Mozambican government advice against sending any vehicles across the border.

Although the protests have been described as “non-violent,” they’ve blocked the Maputo Corridor, cutting off crucial traffic flow for cargo and trucks.

Demonstrators claim the elections were rigged, leading to widespread unrest and roadblocks that now affect South African truck drivers waiting to cross.

“Our counterparts from Mozambique informed us the Maputo Corridor is effectively closed, with protesters obstructing traffic, especially trucks and private vehicles,” Masiapato explained.

BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi clarified that while South African border operations remain open, the lack of activity on the Mozambican side renders clearance processes effectively frozen.

For now, the shutdown remains a temporary measure, with South African authorities on standby to respond as the situation develops. The BMA, alongside other agencies, is coordinating to monitor the situation closely.

Masiapato indicated that any escalation to violence could prompt a complete closure of the Lebombo port.

Truckers should brace for delays as traffic and cargo clearance remain on hold until conditions stabilize.

The BMA continues to monitor the situation, and officials are ready to act if further action is required.
