Limpopo Premier Pledges Support as Families Grieve R81 Crash Victims

Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has expressed deep shock and sorrow following the horrific crash on the R81 in Ga-Sekgopo on Sunday afternoon, which claimed multiple lives and left several families devastated.

The deadly accident, which involved a minibus taxi and two heavy motor vehicles, has sent shockwaves across the province. According to preliminary reports, 12 people were killed in the tragedy, with many others injured. Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the crash.

“The news of this tragic accident is deeply touching, particularly when we consider the mothers and families affected by this loss. The provincial government stands in solidarity with the families during this difficult time, and we are committed to providing them with the necessary support,” said Premier Ramathuba.

Support for Bereaved Families

Emergency services and rescue teams have been working tirelessly at the crash site and local hospitals, where survivors are receiving medical care.

Premier Ramathuba, along with Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye and Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego, is scheduled to meet the grieving families on Monday, 29 September 2025, at noon at the Pietersburg Hospital Recreation Hall. The visit will include assistance with the heartbreaking task of identifying the deceased.

The Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed that the R81 road, which was closed for several hours following the crash, was reopened to traffic shortly after midnight on 28 September.

Premier Ramathuba concluded her statement with a strong call for caution on South Africa’s roads: “We urge all road users to exercise caution and adhere to safety regulations. This tragic event serves as a painful reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance.”

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
