Limpopo’s Frederick Chauke Wins Shoprite National Driver of the Year

Frederick Chauke, a 26-year-old truck driver from Tembisa, Gauteng, has clinched the coveted National Driver of the Year title, outclassing over 1,400 truck drivers from the Shoprite Group’s fleet.

His mastery behind the wheel of a sixteen-wheeler earned him this prestigious accolade.

Originally from Malele, Limpopo, Chauke’s journey with Shoprite began in 2021 when he joined the retailer through a learnership programme. He secured permanent employment in 2022, and since then, his skills and dedication have continued to shine.

“My father was a truck driver for over ten years with the South African government,” Chauke shared.

“He took me on trips during school holidays and taught me what it means to be a great driver. He even won a truck driving competition in Cape Town back in 1997, and now as a pensioner, he is incredibly proud of me.”

The National Driver of the Year competition is a showcase of precision, technical knowledge, and skill. Chauke stood out among 12 tough finalists after excelling in a written exam, a yard challenge, and a road test that included navigating a truck to avoid coins scattered on the road.

Speaking about his victory, Chauke reflected on the responsibility that comes with truck driving. “It’s a demanding career, but one that I take pride in. Competing against seasoned drivers was nerve-wracking, but my father’s teachings gave me confidence.”

Ruaan Britz, Shoprite Group’s Head of the Transport Centre of Excellence, commended Chauke’s performance: “Frederick’s achievement underscores the excellence of our drivers. We invest in continuous training to ensure they remain the best on the continent.”

Based at Shoprite’s Riverfields Distribution Centre, Chauke is an inspiration to young people in his community. “Kids ask me how I eat and sleep on the road. I tell them it’s a fulfilling job, especially with a company like Shoprite that looks after its drivers. I encourage anyone to consider this career.”
