M7 Reopens After Fatal Truck Crash Near Bellville Off-Ramp in Durban

Durban – Traffic has resumed on the M7 following a fatal crash earlier on Monday that claimed one life and left another person injured near the Bellville Road off-ramp in the Malvern area, west of Durban.

The collision, which involved two trucks, caused major disruptions during the morning as emergency services worked on scene. The road was temporarily closed to allow for rescue operations, investigations, and the clearing of debris.

According to initial reports, one of the trucks is believed to have collided into the rear of another truck that had broken down on the highway. An occupant travelling at the back of one of the trucks was declared dead at the scene, while a truck driver sustained injuries and was treated by paramedics.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson earlier confirmed the fatality and warned motorists to avoid the route due to the severity of the crash and secondary collisions in the area.

“At this stage I can confirm one person has suffered fatal injuries and has been declared deceased on the scene by paramedics. Multiple others were attended to, and there were also secondary collisions,” Jamieson said at the time.

The closure led to heavy congestion in surrounding areas, with motorists forced to seek alternative routes during peak traffic hours.

Authorities have since cleared the scene, and the M7 Durban-bound carriageway has now been reopened to traffic.

The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, especially around stationary vehicles and breakdowns on busy routes, as incidents like these continue to highlight the dangers faced on South Africa’s roads.
