Gauteng authorities have issued a formal traffic advisory ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled to take place on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 November 2025. A coordinated security operation will result in temporary road closures, rolling restrictions, and controlled access across Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni.
The joint operation will be led by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Gauteng Traffic Police, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Tshwane Metro Police Department, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, and the South African Police Service (SAPS). The measures are intended to ensure the safe and secure movement of high-level international delegations.
Major Highways and Key Urban Routes Affected
Security operations will impact a number of national roads, including sections of the N1, N3, N12, R21, R24 and M1. Restrictions will extend through major interchanges such as Atterbury, Brakfontein, Samrand, Buccleuch, Rivonia, Allandale, Elands, Xavier and Diepkloof.
Urban areas expected to experience significant disruption include Sandton, Melrose Arch, Rosebank, Fourways, Roodepoort and Nasrec, where controlled access and intermittent closures will be implemented.
Confirmed Full Closures
- Grayston Drive: Full closure on Saturday 22 November from 04h00 to 10h00
- Golden Highway (Rand Show Road to Soweto Highway): Closed from Wednesday 19 November
- Nasrec Road and Rand Show Road: Closed on 22–23 November, limited access for residents only
- Booysens Reserve Road: Closed 22–23 November between Crownwood Road, with controlled access
When convoys are moving, all roads affected will be fully closed, including pedestrian and cyclist movement. Delays of 30 minutes to one hour are expected.
Recommended Alternative Routes
Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes including the M57 between Ekurhuleni and Tshwane, Beyers Naudé Drive and Ontdekkers Road in Roodepoort, Chris Hani Road and Main Reef Road around Nasrec, and various parallel routes in Sandton, Rosebank and Fourways.
The public is urged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and monitor official traffic updates. Emergency and essential services access will be prioritised at all times.
