Man Nabbed in Potchefstroom Driving Truck Hijacked Hours Earlier in Gauteng

Potchefstroom A 30-year-old man, Petroluck Mfanafuthi Zulu, was arrested in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, 12 February 2025, after being found in possession of a suspected stolen truck worth R800,000.

Zulu was intercepted by members of the Public Order Police (POP) while driving the hijacked truck along Nelson Mandela Drive.

His arrest followed a lookout alert for the vehicle, which had been hijacked earlier that day in Bekkersdal, Gauteng.

The hijackers, allegedly dressed as Metro Police officers, had stopped the truck, held the driver at gunpoint, and forced him into a white Volkswagen Polo before dumping him at Duduza Cemetery.

Following his arrest, Zulu appeared before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 14 February 2025, where he faced charges of possession of a suspected stolen truck.

The court ruled that he remain in custody until his next appearance on Monday, 24 February 2025.

Meanwhile, police investigations continue, with authorities working to track down the remaining suspects.

North West police commissioner, Major General Asaneng, praised the officers involved, highlighting their swift response and dedication to fighting truck hijackings.

“We will not allow criminals to terrorise truck drivers and businesses. This arrest is a step forward in ensuring justice prevails,” said Asaneng.

Police have urged the public to report any suspicious activity related to hijackings.
