No trucker ever dreams of ending up in the arrestor bed. It’s the last resort, the final safety net when things go south, and when you’re barrelling down the steep N3 towards Marianhill, it’s meant to be your saving grace. You surrender to it in desperation, expecting it to stop your truck in its tracks.
But what happens when that last hope fails you?
Just after 08:30 this morning, yet another trucker found himself in that exact nightmare.
His truck reportedly lost control on the Durban-bound side of the N3, shot through the arrestor bed before the Marianhill Toll Plaza, climbed the embankment and overturned, leaving him severely trapped in the wreckage.
ALS Paramedics arrived swiftly at the scene and were met with a grim sight.
The truck lay on its side, its cab crushed. Rescue teams from eThekwini Fire Department, SAPS Search and Rescue, and Redline Response were activated and worked alongside paramedics to stabilise the injured driver inside the wreck.

He was eventually freed using the jaws of life and rushed to the hospital in serious condition.
This is now the second truck crash at the same arrestor bed this week. And, one of many that bed failed to arrest.
Just two days ago, another truck also failed to stop in the arrestor lane and overturned at the top of the hill.
These incidents suggest a frightening possibility — the arrestor bed isn’t doing its job.
SAPS and RTI were on scene and are investigating the cause of the crash.
Meanwhile, the trucking community is left asking: If even the arrestor bed can’t save us, then what will?
